Exchange Projects

Americanism
There are many meaningful Americanism projects your club can organize in order to draw attention to both your club and the freedoms we cherish. Your club could dedicate or rededicate a Freedom Shrine, (a display of historic American documents), or implement the Milestones of Freedom Quiz in your community if you already have a Freedom Shrine. The Milestones of Freedom Quiz is a 50-question quiz based on the Freedom Shrine documents. Another easy project to put into action is GiveAKidAFlagToWave. This project involves passing out small American flags in any public place and helps introduce children to the American flag.

Community Service
Projects that can be included in the community service category tend to benefit a wide variety of community members and may include conducting a recycling awareness program or organizing a tree-planting ceremony. Your club could conduct an Adopt-a-Highway program or build a wheelchair ramp at the home of a person with disabilities. There are several project ideas in this category and most of them will vary from community to community as each has different needs. To find out what needs to be done in your area, contact a local homeless shelter or community center and see where your help is needed most.

Youth
Exchange has many youth programs. The most popular recognize young people for their outstanding achievements (Youth of the Month Award) and those who overcome obstacles in their lives and go on to success (A.C.E. Award). In your community you could simply sponsor a bicycle safety class or have club members volunteer their time to read to children at a library or school. Since the National Day of Service is only a few days before Halloween, your club may decide to pass out trick-or-treat safety information in any public area where children may be, such as a toy store or pediatrician’s office or sponsor a party for underprivileged children.

Crime and Fire Prevention
Since October is National Crime Prevention Month, selecting a crime prevention project would be a great idea. There are several activities to select from, including Junior Police or Junior Firefighter, where third through seventh grade students get to know police officers and firefighters in a relaxed and friendly environment. You could also sponsor a child identification program that assists police in locating missing children.

Child Abuse Prevention
Choosing a project that works to prevent child abuse can be very rewarding and fulfilling. Knowing that your help can prevent abductions or Shaken Baby Syndrome is a great feeling. To help prevent child abuse, your club can conduct a Blue Ribbon fundraising/awareness campaign or distribute Shaken Baby Syndrome brochures. Other worthwhile projects include donating a supply of Time-out Teddy bears to local police and fire stations and hosting a Halloween party at your local CAP Center.
